Chess

Chess is a fascinating game, which can be played and enjoyed at all levels. Recent educational research indicates evidence of a strong positive correlation between chess and student academic performance.

The practical application of the skills learned while playing Chess are the same skills necessary for academic excellence. Chess is acknowledged to promote mathematical and abstract thinking skills and is a positive activity for young children.

All pupils in Years 1-6 have one curriculum Chess lesson per week.  A House Chess comptition is held every year.

Chess has enormous benefits for children, building confidence, strengthening academic skills and instilling a sense of fair play and sportsmanship.

The Chess lessons are specially designed to be both fun and educational. The children will not only learn about Chess, they will also be taught qualities such as integrity and ‘playing by the rules’, respecting the opponent, how to challenge and motivate themselves and a host of other skills that will serve them well both on and off the chess board.
