Music

Music plays an important role in everyday life at St Hilary's with pupils singing, playing and experiencing music within the classroom, around the school and beyond.

The musical life of the school is vibrant and diverse, with performances ranging from informal tea time concerts to the prestigious St Hilary's Young Musician of the year competition.  Pupils perform both in school and externally and enjoy frequent trips to musical events.

The majority of pupils receive tuition in at least one instrument or in singing.  With the aim of developing individual talent, specialist tuition is offered in brass, woodwind, strings, piano, drum kit and percussion, guitar and singing.  All children in Year 2 learn the ukulele and in Year 3 they learn the violin.

All children in Pre-Prep and Prep receive a weekly music lesson which follows a stimulating curriculum covering key musical skills, world music topics, composition, notation reading, preparing for performances and more. Class music lessons are delivered by specialist teachers throughout the school and these lessons as well as all other musical activities are over seen by the schools Head of Music, Mrs Purcell.  The extra-curricular provision is wide ranging and inclusive.  Musical clubs include Senior and Junior choir, orchestra, brass group, woodwind ensemble, string ensemble, percussion ensemble and Guitar club.  All the children have the opportunity to be involved in one of the many productions that take place over the course of the school year.  The standard of music-making in the school is high, with many of our children earning great success in examinations and scholarship auditions.
