Drama
In the infamous words of Mary Poppins, “Anything can happen, if you let it!’ Drama at St Hilary’s is centred on confidence building. We prepare our young people to be well equipped to creatively challenge the adventure of life, in Drama, and beyond.
As a curriculum lesson that pupils have once a week, Drama and the Performing Arts form an integral part of the academic and extra-curricular life of the school. Covering a broad range of topics and skills in the curriculum (ranging from Slapstick to Shakespeare, Pantomimes to Physical Theatre), every pupil will leave with a skill-set that excellently prepares them for life beyond the drama studio. These classes are a happy and fulfilling experience, providing a safe environment for children to articulate their ideas and feelings as well as boosting their self-esteem by allowing them to find their own voice in the company of their peers.
We work with an ethos that every child deserves their ‘moment’ – meaning that every student will have a chance to shine in the Performing Arts, however big or small. In achieving this, we strive to work in a professional way and surround the children with positive and challenging experiences.
Each year, every pupil has the platform to ‘tread the boards’ and continue their dramatic studies through performance, and showcase what they have been learning through the curriculum. It is the perfect platform to combine these skills and our teachers have professional experience as performers, as well as directing and choreographing. The standard for productions is impressive, with the Year 5 and 6 performances being a particular highlight of the school calendar. In recent years, we have produced shows such as Beauty and the Beast, Sister Act, Annie and Honk.
LAMDA lessons are extremely popular, with over 100 pupils studying for exams throughout the year. Our pupils are also prepared to perform at the local Godalming Festival, where a wonderful time is always had by all. Pupils are encouraged to take part in the extensive extra-curricular activities available, which include: Musical Theatre and a Technical Production club.
A Drama Scholarship is available for a child entering Year 3 and suitable Year 6 candidates are prepared for Drama Scholarships to Senior School.
